CM concerned over withdrawal of CRPF from naxal affected area

Bhopal:Friday, September 25, 2009:Updated 17:40IST The Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has expressed serious concern over the withdrawal of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) battalion from the Naxal affected district of Balaghat in the State.
In a letter sent to the Union Home Minister Shri P.Chidanbaram, Shri Chouhan has said that the Balaghat district was ensconced within the high-voltage 'Red Corridor' bordered by the extreme Maoist affected districts of Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh) and Gondia (Maharashtra).
Balaghat is inhabited by the Baiga and Gond tribes who have been intimidated to accommodate the movement of Tanda and Malajkhand Dalams of the CPI Maoist.
This year, during the Lok Sabha elections, Balaghat police foiled an attempt by Naxalites to blast the polling booth at Harradehi under the Devbarelij outpost through a landmine on April 22, 2009 Later, on May 11, 2009, Balaghat police seized 15 hand grenades and 2 claymore mines in a timely action against a Naxalite team in P.S. Kimapur.
The arrest of over a dozen active Naxalites during the last couple of years has reduced their overt operations, but their covert activities continue as before, he has added.Union Home Ministry in a letter received here yesterday had informed about the withdrawal of CRPF from Balaghat district.
The Chief Minister has further said that the proposed withdrawal of CRPF would create a vacuum which may enable resurgence of Naxal domination and provide a sanctuary for Naxalites from neighboring States. This may result in an even greater demand for CRPF in future. The presence of CRPF is essential for area domination, searches and for deterrence, he added.
Shri Chouhan has cautioned the Union Home Minister that strategically as well as tactically, the large scale antl-naxalite operations in Chhattisgarh and other States do need to factor in the importance of Balaghat as the bulwark that was preventing Naxalites from dispersing in safe areas and later regrouping to use 'hit and run' guerilla tactics.
Sudden withdrawal of the Battalion of CRPF from Balaghat can put the entire operation at peril, Shri Chouhan has said.
In the end Chief Minister has urged Shri Chidambaram not to upset the delicately poised situation prevailing in this sensitive district, and thereby give the Naxal elements the opportunity for gaining dominance. Shri Chouhan has requested for the reconsideration of the decision and permit retention of the CRPF battalion in Balaghat.
