Bhopal:Saturday, July 4, 2009:Updated 17:35IST

The Madagascar method for more paddy yield in less expenditure has become an instant hit with the farmers of Shahdol district. The paddy farmers are seeing larger interests in adopting this method. Work on Madagascar method also called Shri Paddhati has started in many villages.
This new less expensive method with more yield has set foot in the paddy producing areas due to efforts made by Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Project officials. District Project Officer Shri Barlinge said that a target has been set to link 2200 farmers with Madagascar method in 350 villages under 22 clusters. He said that this method increases income of farmers since it consumes less seeds and water and gives more yield than the traditional method.
The state government has chalked out a comprehensive strategy to promote Madagascar method of paddy farming on a large scale among the farmers of Madhya Pradesh. Under the Rural Livelihoods Project, agriculture teams have been trained by agriculture scientists. The project arranged training to 125 farmers in every cluster in two phases.
In the first phase they were told about the principles of the new method and its comparison with the old method while in the second round the farmers were trained on preparing paddy nurseries using Madagascar method, planning saplings, removing the weeds and management of water in adequate quantity.
Fifty to 60 women have also been trained in every cluster. The work of raising nurseries using Madagascar method has already started. The Project has started a programme to produce seeds of IR 64, IR 36, Sonam, Pusa Sugandha and Basmati this year. SRI Demonstration Plots are also being developed. The Project is also acquiring hybrid seeds of lady's fingers and Barbati and developing demonstration plots with the cooperation of 40 farmers.
