Centre should make available levy sugar of state’s quot

The Chief Minister, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the Union Agriculture Minister, Shri Sharad Pawar to make available 41 thousand metric tonnes of levy sugar soon to Madhya Pradesh from the sugar mills. He mentioned that this sugar had been allotted to the state by the Government of India under the Public Distribution System.
In a letter sent today to the Union Agriculture Minister in this connection, the Chief Minister Shri Chouhan has said that the Government of India should import more quantity of sugar in order to make it available to the common people at fair price.
In his letter, the Chief Minister Shri Chouhan has drew the attention of the Union Agriculture Minister towards the fact that the sugar mills located in Maharashtra have so far not made available 41 thousand metric tonnes levy sugar to the state.
He has also pointed out that this quantity of sugar allotted by the Government of India to the state under the Public Distribution System is only one-third of the total monthly consumption of the state.
He stated that the state has not received this levy sugar despite sending reminders to the Government of India from time to time. This has resulted in adverse effect on availability of sugar and price rise in the state, he added.
Shri Chouhan has further told Shri Pawar in the letter that he (Shri Pawar) might be well aware of the fact that the sugar mills earned undue profit by selling the sugar manufactured by them in the last season at very high rates than the-then its prevailing production cost.
This act of sugar mills also resulted in non-availability of sugar to the consumers at reasonable rates. The Chief Minister further adds in the letter that the Government of India should have imported sugar on a large scale besides putting a check on its profiteering keeping in view the shortage in availability of sugar in the country so as to ensure its easy availability at the fair price.
The Chief Minister Shri Chohan has also drew Shri Pawar’s attention towards the measures taken by the state government to control the increasing prices of sugar and the possible measures in the state. He informed that Madhya Pradesh Sugar Trader License and Control Act – 2009 has been enforced in the state.
Besides, in order to put a check on hoarding and profiteering of sugar, nearly one thousand checking were conducted out of which 117 cases were filed and 56 thousand 535 quintals of sugar worth Rs. 17 crore was seized.
Shri Chouhan informed that prosecution proceedings have been initiated against 48 persons in seven cases of serious irregularities. The Chief Minister said that these measures have helped to a great extent in putting an effective check on hoarding of sugar.
