Shri Nagendra Singh for quality of roads

Two-day workshop of roads and bridges begins
Bhopal:Thursday, September 10, 2009:Updated 20:13IST The Minister for Public Works Department Shri Nagendra Singh has said that ensuring quality of roads is a more formidable task than constructing the roads. While opening a two-day workshop on Quality Assurance and Quality Control here today.
The Minister said that under the dynamic leadership of the Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Madhya Pradesh is scaling new heights in development including construction of roads and bridges.
The Minister said that Madhya Pradesh has given top priority to constructional and upgradation of roads, constructing 27 thousand 819 km length of roads and about 200 high level bridges at a cost of RS. 76 thousand crore over last six years. Principal Secretary, Public Works Shri P.D. Meena presided over the function.
Shri Nagendra Singh laid special stress on proper maintenance of existing roads. Madhya Pradesh government has made a provision of RS. 1938 crore for construction of roads in year 2009-10. He said that the roads should be designed in accordance with requirement of heavy vehicles for good longevity of roads.
Shri Singh said that the apple farming and pucca road construction in inaccessible hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh has brought about a considerable improvement in the lives of farmers there. He said that outsourcing in road construction work in no way reduces the responsibilities of engineers.
They should keep abreast of the latest in their field and improve their management quality. He hoped that the deliberations of the workshop would go a long way in improving quality of roads and bridges in the state.
Principal Secretary Shri P.D. Meena read out the message of the Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan on the occasion. Shri Meena emphasized the need for paying special attention to specific quality of national highways, state highways and rural roads to ensure a proper network of quality roads in the state. He said that that from day one the Chief Minister has paid special attention to improvement of road communication in the state.
Managing Director, M.P. Roads Development Authority Shri Mohammad Suleman informed that the authority has already completed new construction of 3700 km length out of the total length of 10135 km. Construction of another 3315 km is in progress.
Executive Officer of M.P. Rural Roads Development Authority Shri Shailendra Singh informed that by July 2009, construction of 29 thousand 305 length of roads have been constructed connecting 10 thousand 766 habitations with main roads. This year 7894 km long roads have been constructed connecting 2361 habitations so far.
Vice President of Indian Road Congress Shri S.K. Mitana called for special attention to quality of roads in view of increasing pressure on roads.
At the outset, Shri Nagendra Singh lighted the ceremonial lamp. Engineer-in-Chief Shri Shailendra Shukla threw light on the objectives of the workshop. Chief Engineer Shri R.K. Mehra proposed a vote of thanks.
