Bhopal:Saturday, August 29, 2009:Updated 19:10IST The prestigious sports awards Vikram and Vishwamitra were conferred on 30 sports persons and coaches here at a grand function held on the occasion of Khel Diwas at Ravindra Bhawan. Those present on the occasion included Member of Parliament Shri Kailash Joshi, President of Madhya Pradesh Olympic Association Shri Ramesh Mandola, and Shri J.L. Yadav international yachting player from the state who will be honoured with this year"s Arjun Award.
Addressing the function, the Governor Shri Rameshwar Thakur said that sports is important part of our culture and tradition. But, at international platform our performance is lacking behind, he added. Shri Thakur wished that the sportspersons of Madhya Pradesh would ensure leaving their mark in the arena besides glorifying not only state’s but also country’s name in the world. He said that the sports fever should be spread even in rural areas by organizing coaching camps at rural and district levels.
Infrastructure and Encouragement to Continue – Shri Chouhan
Presiding over the function, Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the State Government is committed to extend cooperation in continuously encouraging the sportspersons and by facilitating them with all sports infrastructures. Shri Chouhan proudly said that in the last five years, sports budget has been increased from Rs. four crore to Rs. 50 crore. Money will not be a hurdle in the race of encouragement of sportspersons, he assured.
The Chief Minister said that at present the state runs 14 sports academies. Well-equipped sports village in an area of 172 acres of land in village Satgadi near Bhopal is under construction. Ultramodern stadiums are constructed in Gwalior, Vidisha, Seoni, Khandwa, Bhopal and Shivpuri. He further said that the boosting atmosphere to sportspersons have given positive results as the state has achieved 20 medals on international level and 600 in national level.
Capt. Roop Singh Lifetime Achievement Award
The Chief Minister, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has declared the Lifetime Achievement Award in the name of Late Captain Roop Singh for his outstanding contribution in sports in the state.
Shri Chouhan congratulated all the awardees and wished them success in Olympic and other national and international level sports competitions. The Chief Minister announced that the Vikram awardees will be appointed in government services.
The Chief Minister congratulated the state pride, yachter Shri G.L.. Yadav for his achievement. Shri G.L. Yadav has been conferred the Arjun Award by the Government of India. On this occasion, Shri Chouhan conferred special award of Rs. one lakh to Arjun Awardee Shri G.L. Yadav.
The sportspersons conferred with Vikram Award included Shri Shivendra Singh, Ku. Jagriti Patel, Ku. Shilpa Kaithal, Shri Sunil Keer, Shri Atul Jaat, Shri Sachin Kasture, Shri P. Robin and Shri Tilak Dave (jointly, Ku. Pratha Kshirsagar, Shri Dilip Sharma and Shri Sameer Khan.
Ekalavya Award was conferred on Sarvashri Umesh Yadav, Kuldeep Singh Keer, Ku. Pooja Kudeshiya, Sameer Verma, Navdeep Singh Rathore, Ku. Sidra Sabir, Sandeep Rathore, Ku. Ankita Raikwar, Vikas Manjhi, Ankit Sharma, Ku. Pooja Gome, Ku. Radhika Aapte and Ku. Neha Jain.
Vishwamitra Award was conferred on Shri Roshanlal, Shri Sanjay Saxena and Smt. Sarika Gupta.
The prestigious Late Captain Roop Singh Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on to Shri M.P. Tiwari.
Appointment Letters to Five Outstanding Sportspersons
Appointment letters were given by the Governor to five outstanding players namely Sarvashri Vikash Sharma, Manish Kumar, Munnalal Mahobia, Sachin Verma and Sushri Neelam Mishra.
Earlier, the Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Shri Tukojirao Puar welcomed the guests and said that this year a sum of Rs. 22 crore allotted under the PYKKA project will be spent on development of sports facilities in rural areas.
Earlier, the function was started by paying tribute to hockey wizard Major Dhyanchand. A souvenir focused on these awards was also released. Shri Ramesh Mandela proposed a vote of thanks on the occasion. Additional Chief Secretary, Smt. Ranjana Choudhary; Sports Director Shri Sanjay Choudhary and other sports lovers were present on the occasion.
