Restoring 9 percent growth is the challenge

The Prime Minister giving top priority to a high growth rate in his Independence Day address has been picked up and highlighted by the Press. Quoting him the Indian Express writes, "Restoring 9 percent growth is the challenge: Economy to improve by year end". "Manmohan makes pitch for inclusive, integrated society", headlines the Hindu.
Though the papers are full of photographs of Shah Rukh Khan after his detention at America's Newark Airport, the best one appears in the Sunday Times - showing him performing cheerfully for an Indian-American crowd, after his ordeal ended.
"Stalemate persists on Vasundhara Issue", headlines the Hindu. The Tribune reports that by staying put in Jaipur, Vasundhara Raje has defied party President Rajnath Singh, who wanted her to come immediately to Delhi. The Pioneer headlines - "Battle Royal : Raje defiant, Rajnath firm".
he Sunday Times writes on its front page "For four million retired people, pension is more than last pay". The paper adds that as the revised pension scheme was implemented with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006, it has ensured a substantial amount in arrears - for retired people who were, earlier, living from hand to mouth.
And finally, the Pioneer carries an amazing photograph of a 48-year old elephant in Thailand who has been fitted with a permanent artificial leg, after it had stepped on a landmine ten years ago.
