Bhopal:Tuesday, July 21, 2009:Updated 19:00IST Science Centre Gwalior is organising a Rashtriya Surya Mahotsava with a view to exposing children, teachers and scientists to the experience of the rare celestial event of total solar eclipse. As many as 600 children from 32 states have been selected to take part in this event. So far, children from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh have reached Bhopal to take part in the camp.
The national camp has been organised by New Delhi-based National Council for Science & Technology Communication. It will be hosted by Oriental Group of Institutions, Raisen Road, Bhopal. Solar filters, kits and books will be distributed among the participants. On this occasion, Prof. Yashpal will talk to children and answer their queries.
Arrangements have been made at Bhimbethka to view the solar eclipse with the help of telescopes, solar filters and digital cameras. Participants will share their observations. Lectures and group discussions will also be held.
Bhimbethka falls on the central line of total solar eclipse which will commence there at 5.30 am while sun will rise at 5.46 am. It means that a partial eclipse will be visible at Bhimbethka at the time of sunrise. The solar eclipse at Bhimbethka will end at 7.28 am.
Adviser to Madhya Pradesh Science Centre (Gwalior) Arun Bhargava said that rare celestial events can be seen during the total solar eclipse. Just before the total solar eclipse, some black and white lines are seen in the sky like hundreds of snakes.
These images are caused due to craters and creeks on the surface of moon, which reflect sun's rays in such a manner during the solar eclipse. There are also possibilities of appearance of a garland-like image with red pearls.
When the moon is just about to cover sun totally, there appears a ring-like image which is also called diamond ring. Corona is seen when the moon covers the sun completely. These are very rare celestial events available for viewing to the present generation. If one misses them now, he will be able to see them again only in 2034.
During the total solar eclipse, there are chances of visibility of Mars, Venus and Mercury and other stars. However, it will be difficult to see Uranus and Neptune. Other stars like Procyon, Betelgeus, Cappola etc will also be easily visible.
