State’s first human waste based power plant set up

The first human excreta based power generation plant has been successfully installed at Kutkipura village of Berasia block of Bhopal district. This five kw capacity plant is supplying power to the village for drinking water supply and for the functions held at the community hall. This plant is sure to show the way to the country in the efforts being made to generate power from alternative sources.
Member of Parliament from Bhopal, Shri Kailash Joshi, who has provided funds for this plant from his Local Area Development Fund, visited the village to see the plant. Shri Joshi stressed the need for replication of this successful experiment in not only Madhya Pradesh but also throughout the country. For this he would meet the union minister for energy to formally inaugurate the plant so that people could get acquainted with this unique experiment.
The Sarpanch Shri Shivnarayan Sharma has installed the plant with the cooperation of the villagers at a cost of only Rs 25 lakh. Public Health Engineering Department and Urja Vikas Nigam have provided technical guidance for establishment of this 15 cubic meter biogas plant. Four villages come under Kutkipura Gram Panchayat.
The population of village Triveni village is 675, of Kutkipura 700, of Namadarpura 650 and the population of Khedi village is about 600. The plant has been set up at village Triveni. Almost all the houses in the village have flush latrines, which have been connected to the biogas plant through a sewer line.
The plant has an 8 horsepower engine. Once the engine starts by diesel and after this it functions with the biogas plant generating five kw power. Tie electric line has been connected to the pump installed on the village well. The pump supplies water for drinking and other purposes. Besides, the plant supplies power to the community hall built over an area of 2800 square feet. The hall has seven shops, which also get power from this plant.
The Sarpanch Shri Sharma said that the plant would be gradually expanded and the target is to supply power to all the village households from this plant.
No Dependence on MPEB electricity
During the visit of Shri Joshi there was no electricity supply from MPSEB but the tube lights and fans of the community hall and shops were on, thanks to the plant. Seventy-year-old Shri Beni Prasad informed that during the Nav Durga Utsava the Jhanki was supplied electricity from this plant. The villagers also informed that during marriage ceremonies when there is no elecricity supply from the MPSEB, the plant supplies it to the community hall.
As many as 23 streetlights have been set up which are lighted by solar energy. A special feature of this is that no sooner the electricity of off, the solar lights automatically get on and just as the electricity supply starts they go off automatically.
The Sarpanch is also credited with another novel experiment. He has built a model dwelling unit under Indira Awas Yojana. Costing Rs. One lakh fifty thousand the house consists of two bedrooms, one drawing room, a kitchen and latrine-bathroom.
The Sarpanch urged the Member of Parliament that if the government increases the amount provided under Indira Awas Yojana from RS. 35 thousand to Rs. 50 thousand and the concerning beneficiaries contribute Rs. 50 thousand in the form of labour and remaining Rs. 50 thousand is provided as home loan such model houses can be provided to all the houseless families. Senior leader Shri Shailendrsa Sharma and officials concerned were also present on the occasion.
