Chinese Grass Carp fish to keep Lower Lake clean

Bhopal:Wednesday, October 21, 2009:Updated 18:12IST Urban Administration and Development Minister Shri Babulal Gaur poured 25 thousand seeds of Grass Carp fish in the Lower Lake this morning at Khatlapura and Ginnauri Mandir ghats.
On the occasion, Shri Gaur informed that the seeds of Grass Carp fish have been poured into the lake for preserving environment.
Director Fisheries Department Shri H.S. Sidhu informed that these Grass Carp fish have been imported from China. These species have pharyngeal teeth which help them eat aquatic weeds. The most striking feature of Grass Carp is that it eats aquatic weeds at least 50 per cent of its weight daily. The weight of an adult fish is from 5 to 15 kilogrammes.
The Lower Lake is replete with aquatic weeds and Grass Carp will help remove these aquatic weeds in big way. The Urban Administration Minister instructed BMC commissioner Shri Manish Singh to promote breeding of ducks in the Lower Lake since their presence will be beneficial both aesthetically and environmentally. Shri Manish Singh informed that 25 thousand more seeds of Grass Carp will be introduced into the Lower Lake.
Those present on the occasion included women's leader Smt. Krishna Gaur, corporator Smt. Sushma Sahu, Principal Secretary Gas Relief and Health Shri S.R. Mohanty, Director Gas Relief Department Dr. J.T. Ekka, Director Fisheries Shri H.S. Sidhu and officers of Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
