Centre urged for early recognition to Sagar Medical College

Bhopal:Tuesday, September 1, 2009:Updated 19:25IST The Chief Minister, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the Union Government to initiate necessary steps for according early recognition to the Sagar based Government Medical College.
In a letter sent today to the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad in this connection, the Chief Minister Shri Chouhan has informed the latter that the state government has taken all the necessary steps in accordance with the norms prescribed by the Medical Council of India.
Preparations have almost been completed to give admissions to the students in the first year of the MBBS course in this college from this year. The Chief Minister has further added in the letter that the shortcomings with regard to the fulfillment of the norms of the MCI would be removed till the beginning of the classes of the second year in the college.
It may be mentioned that the state government have taken a decision to set up a government medical college at Sagar in the Bundelkhand region of the state after a long span of 40 years. The work on the construction of college building began in August 2007 after completing land allotment and other formalities.
The total estimated cost of the college building is Rs. 145.42 crore. Also, the state government have allotted land measuring 33.88 acres for the establishment of this college. Further, a total of 11.69 lakh square feet area would be constructed upon on this land for this upcoming college. The first phase of the construction of college building has been completed on August 31.
Moreover, the state government is constantly making efforts to seek recognition from the MCI for this medical college. The State’s Medical Education Minister, Shri Anoop Mishra too had taken up the issue with the Union Health Minister, Shri Azad in this regard.
A team of officials from the Medical Council of India had already inspected the site of the medical college at Sagar in June and July last. On the other hand, 18 teachers have already been appointed in the college. Also, 77 percent employees at the subordinate level have been recruited. Arrangements have also been made for a laboratory and 342-bed hospital affiliated to the college.
