Centre should share 50 percent expenditure on sports academies

The Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Shri Tukojirao Puar has urged the Central Government to share 50 percent expenditure incurred on sports academies in Madhya Pradesh as 50 percent of the players in these academies are from other states. Divisional level sports competitions are organised in Madhya Pradesh for which Central Government should provide funds. He said that Madhya Pradesh Government confers cash awards on the players representing India and winning medals in international competitions. The Central Government should also give them cash awards, he added.
Shri Puar was addressing a Conference of Sports Ministers of States organised in New Delhi today. Union Minister for sports and Youth Affairs, Dr. Manohar Singh Gill presided over the conference attended among others by Union Minister of State for Sports, Shri Prateek Prakash Bapu Patil; Sports Secretaries and Directors of the states.
Union Minister for Sports, Dr. Gill was all praise for the efforts made by Madhya Pradesh Government to promote sports and sportspersons. He said that it is only a matter of time before Madhya Pradesh catches on with other states in this field.
Referring to the practical difficulties in online management of PICA, Shri Puar said that funds are needed to decentralize this system to panchayat level. He made a mention of non-provision of funds by the Central Government for training of Krishasheel and urged the Centre to take suitable steps in this regard. He said that Madhya Pradesh Government is providing employment-oriented training to the youths and Centre should consider providing funds for this also.
Shri Puar pointed out that following concerted efforts to promote and encourage sports and sportspersons by the state government, Madhya Pradesh now figures among the top-10 states in sports. He informed that the budget of Sports Department in Madhya Pradesh has been increased 10-fold to Rs. 50 crore in 2009-10. A Sports Policy has been pursued since 2005 to ensure that Madhya Pradesh makes a mark at national and international level in sports. A State Youth Policy has also been enunciated to promote youth welfare activities in the state.
The Minister informed that after constructing 381 sports grounds in villages having 5 to 14 thousand population now 96 sports grounds are being developed in villages having a population of 4 to 5 thousand. Besides, the state government has appointed 210 rural trainers. Village Youth Centres have been set up in three blocks each of all 50 districts to promote integrated development of the youths. This year, funds have been provided to impart employment training in emerging fields at these centres.
Shri Puar said that 14 academies are being conducted in Madhya Pradesh. The players of these academies have won over 20 medals at international events and 600 medals at national events in last two years. Six girls from state women hockey academy, Gwalior are in senior hockey team and seven girls in junior hockey team of India.
The Captain of Junior Indian Hockey Team is also from Madhya Pradesh. He said that six players from Shooting Academy, three from Wushu Academy, one women player from Wrestling Academy and four players from Fencing Academy are in Indian teams. He informed that the monthly honorarium for the players of the state winning medals at international level has been doubled to Rs.10 thousand.
Shri Puar informed that the ancient game of Malkhamb has been given the status of state game and 14 departmental training centres are being run for this. Vikram Awardees are being given job in government service without examination or interview, he added.
