Century s most important total solar eclipse on July 22

The most important solar eclipse of the century is to occur on July 22 in India. Though the eclipse will be visible in many parts of the country, but its view will be best in Madhya Pradesh. With this in view, Rashtriya Surya Mahotsava (National Sun Festival) will be organised at Bhopal on July 21, 22 and 23 with the cooperation of New Delhi-based National Council for Science & Technology Communication.
The responsibility of hosting the event has been entrusted to Oriental Group of Institutions, Raisen Road, Bhopal. This year, 400 hundreds years of first sighting of sky through binoculars by Galileo are going to complete. On UNESCO's initiative, people are going to observe the current year at International Astronomy Year.
As many as 700 children and 300 teachers and scientists from all over the country apart from thousands of children of Bhopal will take part in Rashtriya Surya Mahotsava 2009. Telescopes, LCD screens etc will be installed for viewing solar eclipse.
The participating children will be provided solar-filter laced goggles, astronomy kits and other related material. Besides, All-India Astronomy Quiz, diary writing competition, various astronomy experiments and cultural programmes will also be held.
Before Rashtriya Surya Mahotsava ex-UGC chairman and the chairman of the steering committee of National Curriculum Framework, Prof Yashpal, Shri Anuj Sinha from Government of India, Dr Ujjwala Tirkey, Dr. Asit Chakravarty, Dr. Virendra Tiwari and 30 other scientists from the state and country will deliver lectures during the festival.
All the activities related to Rashtriya Surya Mahotsava will be held from July 21 to 23 from 10 am at Oriental Group of Institutes, Thakral Nagar, Raisen Road, Bhopal whereas for viewing solar eclipse Bhimbethka has been selected which is situated on National Higher-69 about 40 kms from Bhopal.
Since Bhimbethka is situated on equator of the eclipse, it will be visible more clearly there. According to Madhya Pradesh Science Centre, the next total solar eclipse will be visible in India after the year 2021. A total solar eclipse will also occur in India after 26 years, but it will be visible in Kashmir alone.
