 Action against Anderson
In view of the verdict by the Chief Judicial Magistrate against the management of Union Carbide on June 7, the Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Shri Babulal Gaur has written a letter to chairman of the Group of Ministers, Shri P. Chidambaram to immediately convene meeting of the Group. In his letter Shri Gaur expressed the necessity to request the Supreme Court to revive the Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust.Minister Shri Gaur in his letter addressed to Shri Chidambaram has written that the Group of Ministers should seriously discuss the verdict on June 7 by the Chief Judicial Magistrate so that proper action is taken against the chief accused in the gas tragedy case Shri Warren Anderson and other accused persons. The meeting of the Group of Ministers should be convened immediately to discuss all these serious matters.

Raising the issue of Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust, Shri Gaur in his letter to Shri Chidambaram said that the present chairman of the Trust is Justice (Retired) Shri A. M. Ahmedi and the trust has 10 other members. Most of the members of the trust are not residents of Bhopal. No elected representative is included in the trust and hence the local residents are angry over it.

It will be proper to revive the trust, Shri Gaur wrote to Shri Chidambaram. He said that the Group of Ministers should request the Supreme Court to include the Chief Minister, Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Minister and other people's representatives in the trust on behalf of the state government.

Shri Gaur informed chairman of Group of Ministers that after the gas tragedy the Central Government had sanctioned the first work plan costing Rs 258 crore for relief and rehabilitation of the gas affected. This work plan was for the period 1990-1995. Since the work could not be completed in time, the time was extended till the year 1999.

After this period the Government of India has not sanctioned any financial assistance till date to the relief and rehabilitation of the gas affected. The state government had prepared another work plan costing Rs 982.75 crore and presented it before the then Group of Ministers and the detailed proposal of the work plan was sent to the Ministry of Chemicals and Petro Chemicals. This work plan is still pending with the Central Government.

Shri Gaur in his letter has written that to discuss all these important issues, meeting of the Group of Ministers should be convened immediately. It may be mentioned here that Shri Gaur, being Gas Relief Minister, has been included in the Group of Ministers constituted by the Government of India as permanent invitee member.
