First phase on Census-2011 in MP from today

Citizens to extend cooperation in census
The first phase of Census 2011 is going to start in Madhya Pradesh from tomorrow. First of all, information will be gathered from Governor Shri Rameshwar Thakur followed by Chief Minister Shri Chouhan. The work of listing and enumerating houses and preparing a National Population Register (NPR) will begin
from May 7, 2010. Citizens have been appealed to cooperate with the enumerators (field officers), who will visit their houses to collect information for this work of national importance.

During the first phase from May 7 to June 22, the work of housing listing and counting will be done in 10 divisions, 50 districts and 342 tehsils of the state.

The census work will be done under the provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and Citizenship Manual 2003.

In the later two phases, photographs and finger impressions of all the citizens of above 15 years will be collected followed by issuance of a Unique Identify Number to each citizen by Unique Identification Authority of India. On the basis of these pieces of information, the Union Government will implement its ambitious scheme of issuing Multipurpose Identity Cards, which will be helpful in conveying benefits of various welfare schemes to the targeted beneficiaries.

It may be mentioned that Indian census is regarded as the best census in the world. The first census was conducted in the year 1872 in India. Since the year 1881, census is being conducted simultaneously all over the country. The present Census 2011 is the 15 census of India in all and seventh after the Independence.

The importance of census can be gauged by the fact that it is conducted under all the circumstances and is not halted even in the face of natural calamities, war, breach of political peace etc. The data collected through census is used by the Union and State governments for chalking out various welfare and development schemes. The seats and constituencies of Parliament, Vidhan Sabha and civil bodies are also demarcated on the basis of these statistics.
